The Vestas Power Programme (VPP)

The Vestas Power Programme (VPP) is a strategic R&D alliance between Vestas Wind Systems and Aalborg University, Department of Energy Technology.

The VPP is a five-year programme which will run between September 2007 and August 2012. The research will be carried out by ten PhD students and two PostDocs supervised by Remus Teodorescu, Vestas Professor in Power Electronics at the Department of Energy Technology. Highly acknowledged experts worldwide will be invited as guest professors to take part in the programme.

Through visionary and coordinated research, the Vestas Power Programme will push the wind power technology to even higher levels of reliability and functionality enabling higher renewable power generation, and it will cover three main topics:

  • Power electronics
  • Power Systems
  • Electrical energy storage electronics

The main targets are to identify the most suitable converter technology and control strategy for turbines in large wind farms, to access the impact of large integration of wind power on utility and reliability and to determine the most suitable storage technology that will enable higher wind energy grid integration.

Testimonial: Jorge Martinez Garcia, PhD student within the Vestas Power Programme

Jorge Martinez Garcia from Spain has finished his Master Degree in Industrial Engineering. At the moment, he is finishing his PhD thesis in Denmark being a part of the Vestas Power Programme. "I'm writing my thesis on wind park controllers in order to improve the performance of the power plants. The research milieu at the University combined with praxis knowledge at Vestas creates an exciting and very dynamic environment."
