Honorary lecture on Trends in Grid Connected Converters for PV and Wind Power Systems

Time
Wednesday 7. March 2012 at 13:00 - 14:00

You are hereby invited to participate in the IEEE Denmark Section IAS/IES/PELS chapter honorary lecture

Title:

Trends in Grid Connected Converters for PV and Wind Power Systems

Speaker:

Prof. Remus Teodorescu, IEEE Fellow, Aalborg University, Denmark

Abstract:

Grid converters are key elements in fulfilling the global target of mass penetration of PV and wind energy worldwide. The trends for PV converters has been recently changed with the commercial emergence of highly effective SiC JFETs or MosFets. Higher switching frequencies of typical 48 kHz became possible at high efficiency of 98% of higher with a significant decrease in the volume/weight of minimum 50% in comparison with the current Si MosFet/IGBT technology. This will also have a strong impact on the topologies used in PV inverters and some trends of returning to 2 level bridge inverters will be shown.

In wind energy, the trend of building turbines of 6-7 MW is also challenging the low voltage converter technology. Parallel converters is possible but also moving to MV levels has been demonstrated by ABB and Converteam/GE. Some pros and cons of both technologies will be shown along with the possibility to move for the Multi Modular Converter (MMC) technology which is currently used in applications like STATCOM or HVDC. The impact of utilizing SiC diodes in high power modules will be also analyzed along with the possible utilization of high power 1700V SiC JFETS in the near future.

About the Speaker:

Remus Teodorescu received the Dipl. Ing. Degree in electrical engineering from Polytechnic University of Bucharest, Romania in 1989, and Ph.D. Degree in power electronics from University of Galati, Romania, in 1994. In 1998, he joined Aalborg University, Department of Energy Technology, power electronics section where he currently works as a professor. He has more than 200 papers published, 1 book (“Grid Converters for Photovoltaic and Wind Power Systems”, ISBN-10: 0-470-05751-3 – Wiley) and 5 patents. He is IEEE Fellow, Past Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics Letters and chair of IEEE Danish joint IES/PELS/IAS chapter.

Prof. Remus Teodorescu is the founder and coordinator of the Green Power Laboratory at Aalborg University focusing on the development and testing of grid converters for renewable energy systems. He is the coordinator of Vestas Power Program, involving 10 PhD students and guest professors in the areas of power electronics, power systems and energy storage. His areas of interests are: design and control of power converters used in photovoltaics and wind power systems, grid integration with wind power, medium-voltage converters, HVDC/FACTS, energy storage.

A light reception will be organized after the lecture. Due to this reception we kindly ask you to register for the event by sending an email to Tina Larsen tll@et.aau.dk
