Electrical and Power Electronics Laboratory

INTRODUCTION

The laboratory and equipment support power electronics and high voltage projects for multiple student group and research projects. The lab facilitates faculty and students who are conducting research, theses, and industry sponsored projects in power electronic converters and electric drives in particular and electrical energy conversion in general. In addition, the lab has been used to accommodate for technical workshop in power electronics and drive applications In terms of research activity, the lab has drawn interest from power electronic companies in the form of either student projects or consulting projects that make use of the power electronic lab.

FACILITIES

Currently, the lab houses a total of 8 benches. The following equipment are available in the Lab:

  • Grid Connected Converter Setups with Danfoss FC302 DC-AC inverter connected to the grid through an LCL filter and a 50Hz transformer
  • The dSPACE DS1103 PPC is a mixed RISC/DSP digital controller providing a powerful processor for floating point calculations as well as comprehensive I/O capabilities.
  • Control of converter or grid side current using PWM
  • Constant power electronic loads
  • Multiterminal medium voltage connection
  • Danfoss Drive System for induction machine and PM synchronous motor
  •  Different DC and AC Electrical machines
  • TORQUE TRANSDUCER With a USB cable to PC, for a convenient measurement of the steady state and dynamic torque. Sampling frequency at 2 KHz for dynamic torque measurement.
  • Software integrated with the torque transducer for on-line torque, speed, power, and torque ripple measurements.

Torque transducer
  • With a USB cable to PC, for a convenient measurement of the steady state and dynamic torque. Sampling frequency at 2 KHz for dynamic torque measurement.
  • Software integrated with the torque transducer for on-line torque, speed, power, and torque ripple measurements.

High precision, multi-channel data acquisition system from Microstar Laboratories
  • has an onboard 400 MHz AMD K6-III processor.
  • provides 14-bit A/D converter resolution.
  • samples analog inputs at up to 800k samples per second.

Chroma programmable AC/DC power supplier
  • capable of generating ac, dc and ac dc voltages.

Arbitrary Function Generator (AFG-3000)
  • Wide frequency range from 1μHz ~ 80/50MHz.
  • 16-bit, 200MSa/s, 1M-point deep arbitrary waveform.

Various oscilloscopes and voltage, current probes from Tektronix including the high-end DPO-4000 series
