Eastern European award to Danish energy researcher · 8. September 2010

Eastern European colleagues honored one of Denmark's leading energy researchers for his contribution to a more sustainable global energy supply. Professor Frede Blaabjerg, Aalborg University, received the award at a conference in the Republic of Macedonia this week where the topic was exactly that – cleaner and more efficient energy production.

The international scientific organization, EPE-PEMC, presented the EPE-PEMC Award to the Aalborg professor at the 2010 "International Power Electronics and Motion Control Conference." Frede Blaabjerg was also the keynote speaker at the conference in Ohrid in southwestern Macedonia, and gave a talk on the research field he is now being recognized as having had significant influence on, namely power electronics and control for renewable energy systems.

EPE-PEMC was originally established with an Eastern European basis for building bridges between research in eastern and western Europe. The organization is celebrating its 40th anniversary, and today counts representatives from 17 European countries working to promote the exchange of knowledge across Europe. Recognizing the outstanding achievements of two researchers, the EPE-PEMC Award also goes to the American Thomas A. Lipo, a professor at the University of Wisconsin, besides the Danish Frede Blaabjerg.

For Frede Blaabjerg the recognition comes from scientific peers at a well-timed point in his career. He just said goodbye to the dean post at Aalborg University's engineering faculty in order to devote himself full time to research. Work for the Board of the Danish National Advanced Technology Foundation and the Danish Council for Strategic Research along with selected positions of trust in domestic and foreign councils remain a high priority. But to get more time to cultivate his field, he has greatly weeded out his commitments.

- Research requires time for contemplation, so it has been necessary for me to forgo other things. The award is a great incentive for prioritization, precisely because it's based on my efforts and my achievements as a researcher, says Frede Blaabjerg.

According to the nomination he was given the award in recognition of two decades of active and dynamic research that has been marked by successful bridge building between academia and industry. Frede Blaabjerg is being honored for having contributed with technological results that have had great influence on the rapidly growing production of renewable energy. His impact as a researcher is well documented with over 700 scientific publications and the award from EPE-PEMC adds to a series of previous personal distinctions including the Grundfos Award, the Ib Henriksen Foundation’s Research Award and the international engineering group, the IEEE Power Electronics Society's Distinguished Service Award.
