Energy Researchers to Aalborg after Egyptian Unrest · 30. March 2011
Unrest in the Middle East means that next year some of the world's leading researchers on energy will gather in Denmark instead of Egypt at a major conference on technology for renewable energy production and the smart grid of the future.
The international professional engineering association IEEE's Power Electronics Society is sponsoring the conference Power Electronics and Distributed Generation Systems (PEDG 2012) in June 2012. Power electronics is used to convert energy from one form to another, making it an essential technology in efforts to integrate more renewable energy from wind, sun and water into the grid. According to Frede Blaabjerg, Professor at Aalborg University’s Department of Energy Technology, hosting the conference will be a perfect opportunity to show an international audience what Denmark has to offer in renewable energy technology and the incorporation of large amounts of renewable energy.
- We hope to attract 300-400 participants from around the world and they will want to see what Denmark can do in those areas. We had originally offered to organize the next conference in 2014, but the unrest in Egypt prompted the organization to ask if we could step in next year since there could be practical difficulties doing this in Egypt as planned. We’ve agreed to do it and the timing is perfect because there is currently a lot going on in this area both in Denmark and internationally, says Frede Blaabjerg.
Results from a new research center
Frede Blaabjerg heads the new major strategic research center "CORPE" (Center Of Reliable Power Electronics), which, with support from the Danish Council for Strategic Research and a total budget of over 90 million kroner, will accelerate the transition to renewable energy through improved and more reliable power electronics. The center collaborates with international universities in Aachen, Zurich and Maryland and with the Danish companies Danfoss Power Electronics, Grundfos Management, Vestas Wind Systems and KK-Electronic.
- It’s a strong team and I expect that we can present some of the results from the work in CORPE when our international colleagues come to Aalborg, says Frede Blaabjerg.
