With the integration of renewable energy and the increasing demand for various load, more and more STATCOMs would be installed to provide reactive power support and maintain the voltage profiles. However, STATCOM based on power inverters tend to cause instability in a wide frequency due to the interactions between multi-time scale control behavior of inverters and grid impedance.

This Ph.D. project will mainly focus on investigating the dynamic equivalents of multiple wind turbines and their multi-time-scale interactions with the STATCOM under different grid conditions. This research aims at gaining new insight, methods and models, which will contribute to achieve a better understanding of the multiple resonances of wind turbines converters and STATCOM in the different frequency ranges. Eventually, the knowledge and applicable models expected to be derived within the research will enable the involved parties to improve e.g. the filter design, the reactive compensator application, and the control systems improvement and in general ensure a high degree of reliability of future wind farms integration into power grid where STATCOMs are widely applied.
