Mission and Focus Areas of Fluid Power in Wind and Wave Energy


The overall mission of the Fluid Power in Wind and Wave Energy research programme is to conduct research at the highest international level in the field of fluid power components, systems and control - specifically related to renewable energy sources as wind turbines and wave energy converters.

Focus Areas

The focus areas of the research programme are:

  • Research and development in relation to high efficient and reliable Discrete Displacement Technology (DDT) components and systems
  • Designing control strategies for DDT components and systems
  • Advanced control of wind turbines in relation to fluid power systems (pitch, yaw, etc)
  • Development of high efficiency control strategies for wave energy converters.

The core research activities are concentrated around:

  • Development of large capacity fast switching valve technology
  • Development of system topologies for efficient power take-off for wave energy converters
  • Development of intelligent hydraulic yaw systems for large scale wind turbines
  • Development and testing of control strategies for wind turbines, incl. advanced and intelligent pitch and yaw control General development of controllers for hydraulic (fluid power) components and systems

All research activities are based on a strong combination of theoretical work, modelling and simulation and experimental testing in the laboratory.

The research programme is a programme initiated to strengthen the research activities within fluid power components and systems and to support the development activities within these areas. The collaboration partners include:

The programme is open for new partners with the objective to strengthen these activities by collaborating with national and international research groups, institutions in academia and industry to maintain the highest possible research level and to facilitate the knowledge to new products and solutions.
