There will be a guest lecture on December 10 prior to the PhD defence of Zhongxu Wang
From 36 W to 3 GW: Challenges with Converters for Higher Power Rating
Dr. Nan Chen, Principal Scientist at ABB Power Grids Research Center, Sweden
In this presentation, Nan Chen will share his working experience which origins from a PhD student focusing on 36 W lighting power supply into a R&D engineer for HVDC converter valve integration up to a few GW rating. A list of differentiating technical challenges for converter with higher power rating will be discussed such as demanding component rating, high RAM (Reliability, Availability, Maintenance) requirement as well as cost optimization etc. Some examples and lessons learned from practice will also be shared.
About the lecturer
Nan Chen (S’09, M’12) was born in China. He received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from the Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China, in 2006 and 2008, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree from the City University of Hong Kong, Kowloon, Hong Kong, in 2012. From February to August 2011, he was an Intern at ABB Corporate Research Center, Switzerland. He is currently a Principal Scientist at ABB Power Grids Research Center, Västerås, Sweden. He has published more than 20 technical papers and holding more than 35 patent first filling with 9 granted so far. His research interests include the power electronics application in lighting system, resonant converters, HVDC and FACTS.
