Overview on Fuel Cells Modeling, Control and Diagnostics
Professor Cesare Pianese, Department of Industrial Engineering – University of Salerno (ITALY)
The lecture focuses on the advancements attained by today research on monitoring and diagnostics for fuel cell stacks and systems. The role of hydrogen and fuel cells in the current technological transition scenario is initially recalled, with attention to the main aspects related to system performance optimisation and industrial issues. Afterwards, the lecture addresses the key features associated to design process of monitoring, control and diagnostic tools.
The lecture gives the basic concepts of model-based monitoring and diagnostics along with the features related to Fault Tree Analysis and Fault Signature Matrix. These aspects are analysed from both design and application point of views. Examples are given for Solid Oxide Fuel Cell systems.
With respect to Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells, the use of Equivalent Circuit Modelling (ECM) is discussed, addressing the main advantages and issues for on-board Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) implementation for diagnosis.
About the lecturer
Cesare Pianese (1961) holds a M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from Univ. of Naples Federico II (Italy), a Research Master in Fluid Mechanics from von Karman Institute (Belgium) and a PhD in Fluid Machinery from Univ. of Naples Federico II (1991).
Was researcher at Fiat Research Centre (1987-88), then received a research fellowship grant at Istituto Motori of National Research Council (Italy) and a Post-Doc fellowship grant at University of Salerno (Italy).
Since 1994 teaches Internal Combustion Engines and Energy Conversion Systems, in 2014 become Full Professors at University of Salerno (Italy). His research interests include Modelling, Control and diagnostics of Internal Combustion Engines, Powertrain (conventional, hybrid) and Fuel Cells.
Since 2009, Cesare Pianese has been involved in 10 EU projects on Fuel Cells Diagnostics and coordinator as PI (7) and coordinator (3). Has published more than 120 papers indexed on Scopus and inventor of 5 patents.
He teaches Fluid Machinery & Energy Systems, Modelling of Energy & Propulsion Systems, Advanced Energy & Propulsion Systems. Cesare Pianese serves as Deputy of the Rector for the Technology Transfer.
