The high-voltage direct current (HVDC) interconnection at onshore delivery points, and the variability of wind power, both at the individual wind farm and AC power collection grid, make large scale wind farm integration very challenging. There are wide-ranging consequences for voltage and angle stability of the overall system and its fault response behavior. Moreover, the traditional distinction between control and protection is largely absent in the converter-dominated offshore power network. The timescale of operation of protection devices (e.g. relays and circuit breakers) are within the timescales of the fast control loops of wind turbines. This project thus aims at developing methodologies to robustly integrate the network protection and control of wind turbines, under the wide-ranging wind speeds and diverse fault conditions.
