ABSTRACT

Power Electronic converters have already been widely installed with renewable energy source, electric drives, energy storage systems, flexible AC transmission systems, and high-voltage DC transmission systems. With more power converters installed, harmonics and resonances will be introduced into power grids, which can even lead to the instability of the power electronic based power system. This Project focus on achieving an adaptive active damper to enhance small signal stability and transient stability. It aims to dampen the varied resonance frequencies, passivity enhancement of converters.  Therefore, the passive filter of the active damper will be first optimized to achieve a high conductance band for varied frequency. Then, the passivity characteristics of grid and converter are analyzed and the suitable virtual impedances are designed accordingly. To improve the cost-effective of active damper, it should be considered the required capacity ratio and switching frequency ratio of active damper and power inverters, and the wide bandgap devices will be utilized for providing a wideband damping.
