Mission and Focus Areas of Efficient, Intelligent and Reliable Fluid Power Technology


The overall mission of the research programme is to conduct research at the highest international level in the field of efficient, intelligent and reliable fluid power components, systems and control – with special focus on digital displacement technology and related to areas as wind turbines, wave energy, maritime and offshore applications, and mobile and industrial hydraulics.

Focus Areas

The focus areas of the research programme are:

  • Research and development in relation to high efficient and reliable Discrete Displacement Technology (DDT) components and systems
  • Designing control strategies for DDT components and systems
  • Advanced control of wind turbines in relation to fluid power systems
  • Development of high efficiency control strategies for wave energy converters
  • Development of self-contained efficient autonomous drives
  • Improving the reliability of fluid power components and systems

The core research activities are concentrated around:

  • Development of large capacity fast switching valve technology
  • Development of system topologies for efficient power take-off for wave energy converters
  • Development and testing of control strategies for wind turbines, incl. advanced and intelligent pitch and yaw control
  • General development of controllers for hydraulic (fluid power) components and systems
  • Development of condition monitoring and fault detection and diagnostics methods for fluid power systems
  • Fault tolerant control of fluid power systems
  • Highly accelerated lifetime testing of fluid power components and systems

The research programme is a programme initiated to strengthen the research activities within fluid power components and systems and to support the development activities within these areas. The collaboration partners include:
